Keynote by David Bihanic (org. by Romain Lacroix, DDC)
With the participation of: Caroline Goulard (DATAVEYES), Stéphane Buellet (CHEVALVERT) and Martial Geoffre-Rouland
Data now flow in such proportions and haste that it would become almost impossible, or at least very difficult, to make its clear, rather ‘totalizing’ representation, if not synthetic — even when it is apprehended selectively, by subject or area of interest. However, as massive, profuse or finely detailed, data are part of a “measurement” or an almost exhaustive measurement of the various events and phenomenon of the world, from which models, schematics and supposedly enlightening figures are produced every day.
Unfortunately, despite long-standing efforts to produce data images (in the broad sense) that expose, report and inform, it must be said that data, as a substance, a matter-material, still largely escapes our sensitive and experiential reality.
To overcome this difficulty or else identify possible leads encouraging a phenomenal (re)inscription of data, some artists, designers and engineers are engaged in so-called materialization, data commodification, either creative commodification or physical, tangible transliteration: from data to the object (formation, conformation, deformation, transformation, etc.).
On November 6th 2019, thanks to Romain Lacroix, several speakers will join me: Caroline Goulard, director and co-founder of the Dataveyes office, Stéphane Buellet, designer and co-founder of the Chevalvert studio and Martial Geoffre-Rouland, digital designer-artist. We will all reflect on our respective projects and experiments in physicalization, sonification or even data luminification.
